Understanding issues with SEPA Direct Debit payments as an organizer

If a SEPA Direct Debit payment fails, we notify both the ticket-buyer and organizer by email. Eventbrite cancels the ticket and releases it back into the event's inventory for sale. If the payment fails after the event starts, you'll have to settle the payment outside of Eventbrite and we'll add a negative charge to the event to balance the funds. If there's another payout happening for the event, we'll deduct the charge from that payout. Most SEPA Direct Debit purchases fail if there aren't enough funds in the buyer's account, but there are a few more reasons this could happen.

Failed payments before the event

When a SEPA Direct Debit payment fails before the event starts, Eventbrite cancels the ticket and releases it back into the event's inventory for sale. We notify organizer and buyer, and encourage the buyer to address the issue and register again. No further action is required from the organizer.

Failed payments after the event has started

When a SEPA Direct Debit payment fails after an event has begun, the buyer cannot settle the payment through Eventbrite, and we encourage the organizer and ticket-buyer to arrange an alternate means of payment outside of Eventbrite. We apply a negative charge at the price of the failed payment to balance the funds in the event. If there's another payout happening for the event, we'll deduct the charge from that payout.

Why did a SEPA Direct Debit payment fail?

When you view an orders report of a failed SEPA Direct Debit payment, these statuses will be displayed within an order:

  • Failed (insufficient funds): The payment failed because there were insufficient funds in the buyer's bank account at the time of the settlement.

  • Failed (payment error): An error occurred while the payment was processing. This can happen for a variety of reasons, for example because of incorrect or missing information (IBAN, billing address), or because of a mismatch between the ticket-buyer's and account holder's name. However, there could be other reasons.

  • Failed (chargeback): The payment failed because the customer claimed a chargeback through their bank. With SEPA Direct Debit, customers can claim refunds up to 8 weeks after settlement for authorized transactions, and up to 13 months for unauthorized transactions.

  • Payment declined (bank issue): Banks can decline SEPA Direct Debit transactions for various reasons, for example when an account is closed or not set up for SEPA Direct Debit. When a bank declines the transaction, we encourage the ticket-buyer to contact their bank to find out more.
