About this event

  • 3 hours

When we create a more complex composition, using several elements in a collage, it is very usual to get a lot of visual confusion, where the elements seem to "fight" with each other. There are various elements and principles of visual language that can help organize a composition, such as the use of color, contrasts, and gradations.
To create a sense of space there are many resources used by artists: linear perspective and atmospheric perspective are methods of achieving depth that exploit differences in size, contrast, color, and texture between the various elements of a composition. On the other hand, collage, as an artistic language, celebrates rather than denies the lack of depth in cut-out shapes. Thus, it is also possible to purposefully explore flat shapes in a collage, achieving a sense of depth that is, shall we say, more poetic, metaphorical, and less literal.

In this workshop, we will explore both the concept of atmospheric perspective and how we can use it to give a sense of depth to our compositions, as well as ways of using flat shapes to make creative overlays with great visual appeal.

No previous experience in collage or any other artistic language is necessary.

Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
