The important role of European public radio cannot be understated in the 21st century. For all the talk of streaming, radio continues to play an important role in both the discovery process as well as the social relevance that is found in every musical ecosystem that treasures diversity. Westway invites leading EBU-member radio personalities to reflect on the role of public radio in the 21st century and what can be done - or even what can be done better - by way of fulfilling this mission. 

W1. European Radio in the 21st Century


ARTE invited WHY Portugal to Zamora, in the end of 2023, to a ground-breaking exchange on the potential of cross-border Iberian collaborations between Portugal and Spain. WHY Portugal now returns the invitation, so that ARTE comes to Guimarães to present a new Iberian collaboration project to bring together the Portuguese and Spanish music industries.

Manfred Tari’s Parliament of Pop returns to Westway LAB fostering provocative thoughts on how to improve the dynamics between the European music ecosystem and Brussels. What lies ahead, from Brussels, by way of support to the music sector? What becomes of Music Moves Europe in the coming years? 

W3. Parliament of Pop

WHY Portugal presents a mid-way report on the Algorithms project, led by Melboss in Spain, aiming to provide digital marketing tools and an AI assistant so that European artists can break into the Latam markets via digital marketing and distribution. After the first Bootcamp at Digital Music Days Lisbon and the second Bootcamp in Dublin, the panel will share the mid-way project findings in preparation of its third Bootcamp in the Fall of 2024. A must attend for all artists wanting to find out about digital marketing and the Latam markets. 

WP4. Algorithms: Digital Mentoring Session

Westway LAB continues to foster the relationship between music and the audiovisual sector featuring a yearly panel on Music Supervision. This year’s guests are Pete Saville, from Split Music in London UK, and César Mathieu, from Royal Sync in France.

Rob Challice was invited to Westway LAB as a keynote back when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. We are honoured to finally be able to welcome Rob in person in Guimarães, to share his valuable expertise as a leading artist booking agent working internationally out of London. Currently at Team Wass, Rob Challice has over 40 years’ experience in the live music industry as agent, promoter and festival organizer. Rob was one of the co-founders of Coda Agency in 2001; Coda is now part of the Wasserman Music Group. Acts represented by Rob include KEG, The Mary Wallopers, Allison Russell, Bon Iver, Cory Wong, KT Tunstall, Kings of Convenience, Nickel Creek, Toro Y Moi, Warpaint and more.

W6: International Keynote: Rob Challice

Clementin Diard, from Your Music Marketing, occupied various roles to gain a comprehensive understanding of the music industry's many facets. Specializing in Global Music, he has managed numerous projects across Europe and divides his time between Berlin, Paris, and London. He is the co-founder of Your Music Marketing, the first Ads Manager tailored exclusively for the music industry. He also created Filature, a boutique company focused on early-stage development of artists, songwriters, and producers in multiple markets. As a self-taught professional, Clem is driven by his passion for developing innovative models to support indie artists and record labels in a constantly evolving music market.

W7: Digital Marketing Strategies

Can virtual Reality concerts be held worldwide from the perspective of copyright and artistic rights? Europe is the least prepared region in the world to face these new formats, and small to medium-sized independent artists will face greater difficulties accessing these new environments if we don’t make it accessible and affordable.

StreamArt aims to explore this field and assist solutions for Europe in finding a formula to facilitate these new channels of communication and artistic expression. The project advocates for forums of discussion among guild associations, European management societies, and artist and label associations to enhance the scope of repertoire licensing and achieve consensus among all stakeholders, the goal is to identify an appropriate licensing model. This will contribute to fostering future investments in this sector. We believe these are crucial modifications in the European Digital Single Market context. Bruno Munoz, from Lovemonk (ES) presents this exciting 

WP8: StreamArt

Last year, Markus Linde led the Europe in Synch Academy workshop bringing together the Portuguese audiovisual sector with labels, publishers and composers participating in the EinS project. This year, “The Missing Link” presents an open follow-up, via the Westway PRO conferences, featuring speakers Marta Ramalho, synch clearing agent, and Rodrigo Dominguez, music publisher with Peer Music. In Rodrigo’s own words: “There’s so much to be improved in this eco system, that I have no option that to accept your invitation.”

WP10: MMVV presents the Mercat focus on Portugal

Music360 is an initiative that delves into the significant, yet often overlooked, value that background music brings to commercial settings such as retail stores, restaurants or bars. It aims to fill a critical information gap about the usage and impact of background music. The project is focused on addressing the needs of a wide range of stakeholders: venues require insights into the benefits of music, collective management organisations (CMOs) look for precise data for fair royalty distribution, creators are interested in how their music is played, and policymakers seek information on music's social and economic impact. MUSIC 360 is creating a platform to gather and analyze data on music usage and its effects, Music360 endeavours to enhance understanding and practices around the usage and valuation of music in public and commercial domains, aiming to support the sustainability of the music industry and recognise its role in cultural and economic environments.

W11: GDA Presents Music360 - A 360-degree perspective on the value of Music.

The BELEM project - Boosting European Lyrics and Entrepreneurial Monetization - The large-scale Creative Europe cooperation project BELEM enters its third year with two new open-calls for cascading grants for Co-Creation and Co-Production. Come find out how the project works on the valuation and monetisation of online lyrics, lyric translations and co-creation and co-production grants that are most useful for European languages, songwriters, and music publishers.
