What is this?

This is a series of writing workshops for those who identify as women and non-binary limited to 5 people only. You can hone your writing skills, build self-belief, learn new perspectives, experiment with the literary craft of writing, grow confidence, connect in person, and strengthen connections in the community.

Joseph Conrad author said- “My task, which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel--it is, before all, to make you see."

This is a new in-person group to raise the profile of DIVERSE voices in fiction and non-fiction writing to encourage newbies or progression on current projects. Tananarive Due, author and American Book Award winner said- “Diversity’ should just be called ‘reality.’ Your books, your TV shows, your movies, your articles, your curricula, need to reflect reality.”

— Why? ―

Why a women and non-binary writing group?

There is a need for space for this LGBT+ group in Lisbon to learn, laugh and be literate together. Cher the Singer said ‘Women are the real architects of society’ but we have not really reached equality and writing is one way to lead change in a gendered world. As E.M. Hamill, author of Dalí writes “Male? female? both? No one's ever asked me that question, I see myself as neither. I'm something different altogether.” It is what we learn about throughout our experience through human connection that is powerful.

I am running this only until 3rd September on a donation fee basis and then after it will become a fixed affordable fee to attend from October 2022. So, get to the workshops before then!

What is the aim of writing with Queerlysh?

Let’s have a social informal workshop, where we are supportive of each other in a creative safe space while showing up regularly to write. Writer Edgar Allan Poe said, "Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality."

Who is this for?

You have written rants in your mind but never taken pen to paper because you got distracted or thought I’m really not a writer. Is that true? You could be a writer if you give yourself the time to write. Also, you may be a published writer, or you may be an aspiring writer who hasn't started. You may have a few ideas you want to try out and want some feedback on for a project that you have been working on for a while.

‘We realize the importance of our voice when we are silenced.’ - Malala Yousafzai

Pakistani activist for female education and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate

What is the format?

As people show up, in the first 10 mins we'll have a chat and get to know each other.

There will be some micro icebreakers. From that point, we'll write silently and for 60 minutes FOCUSED ON WRITING in whatever genre we choose in the comfort of our own imagination. Prompts will be provided. Then we come back at the end of the 60 minutes of writing time and share a short piece of up to 500 words ending in a discussion about a theme that has come through in the writing. Writing is usually in English and when the writing time is up, we'll start to share our work. SHARING IS ALWAYS OPTIONAL but always appreciated.

Will I get feedback?

The aim is to give supportive balanced feedback-2 points that you liked after hearing the reading and then 1 or 2 points you thought could be improved and how. Also, some suggestions are given about what you take forward into the work that you do independently.

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”

Confucius, Chinese philosopher, and politician

How do we finish?

Everyone writes down one goal to achieve by the following meeting. We say our goodbyes and share our thoughts about the exercises in the workshop using two words.

"If we understood the power of our thoughts, we would guard them more closely. If we understood the awesome power of our words, we would prefer silence to almost anything negative. In our thoughts and words, we create our own weaknesses and our own strengths. Our limitations and joys begin in our hearts. We can always replace negative with positive." -Betty Eadie, author.

Who am I?

About me….Queen Queerlysh (QQ) I’m a totally woke comedy improviser, a British-born queer comedian & global citizen reminding you how to play. I use humour to push our views into the light by testing our truth. I highlight absurdities about social and political issues: showing us alternative ways of thinking and being. I aim for laughter, feeling, and fun.

My most recent show was a mix-tape of spoken word and rap poetry. It is built around prepared and improvised work from suggestions from audience members escalating into raps, songs, or stories. With my comedic timing, poetic literacy, and freestyle rapping abilities, blurring the line between comedy show and concert. The themes in the show are feminism, mental health, LGBTQI-ness, and dogs.
