About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Cyanotype photography is a camera-less technique invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. It involves laying an object (or a negative) on paper coated with a solution of iron salts sensitive to UV light. Sunlight reacts with the chemicals on the paper, creating the recognisable cyan-blue background. Not only is this a low-impact photographic process, but it also allows us to work with nature in a tactile way, away from screens. In this workshop, participants will create a small, handmade zine using the cyanotype process. We'll arrange materials like cutouts and plant silhouettes to form a design on a single sheet of pre-coated paper. After exposure and development, once the print is dry, we’ll fold the page into an 8-page zine, transforming it into a compact, tactile booklet. This workshop combines printmaking and bookbinding, encourages a hands-on approach to blending nature and printmaking, offering an opportunity to engage with this technique and experiment with spontaneity creating an improvised zine layout. No prior experience is necessary, just a curiosity for experimentation. All materials will be provided.

Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
