Title:
Life Course Socioeconomic Conditions and Physical Limitations Trajectories: A 6-Year Follow-Up Study Across Cohorts in Three Southern European Countries

ABSTRACT:
Understanding trends in physical limitations among adults is essential for effective healthcare planning and policymaking. Emerging research suggests that newer cohorts entering old age may be facing more physical limitations and accelerated ageing—a phenomenon referred to as “generational health drift.”
In Southern Europe, however, evidence of this trend remains mixed. One reason could be the underrepresentation of life course socioeconomic conditions in cohort comparisons, as well as varying levels of welfare state development across the region.
This study explores these dynamics by estimating functional limitation trajectories across cohorts in Portugal, Spain, and Italy using longitudinal data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Latent growth models are applied to assess the cumulative impact of socioeconomic factors from early to late life.
Findings indicate that stronger welfare state consolidation correlates with better ageing outcomes across cohorts, despite persistent social inequalities. The results highlight the urgency of adapting social policy to better address emerging vulnerabilities among future generations entering old age.
