Welcome to Discussion: Modernism + the Algarve, Minority interest or public priority? happening at Club Farense on November 8, 2025 at 6:00 PM (Europe/Lisbon Timezone). Join us for a lively debate on the relevance of modernism in the Algarve region. Is it a niche interest or a pressing public concern? Let's delve into this intriguing topic together. Don't miss out on this thought-provoking event!

The talk will include a presentation and preview of Richard Walker’s book Faro Modernism, offering attendees an early insight into his research and documentation of Faro’s distinctive modernist landscape.

This debate will explore the cultural and social significance of Faro’s modernist architecture. With one of the highest concentrations of modernist buildings in southern Europe, the region faces both recognition and preservation challenges. The discussion will ask: is modernism here a niche interest for enthusiasts, or a broader public priority?

The panel will be chaired by Leanne Cloudsdale (founder of Concrete Communities) and will feature:

  • Richard Walker – artist and author of the forthcoming book Faro Modernism
  • Polly Powell – owner of Batsford Books (UK), daughter of Geoffrey Powell of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon (Barbican Estate architects)
  • Sophie Mathias – Faro-based architect and urbanist
  • Chris de Oliveira – co-founder of the Faro Modernist Weekend and the Modernist Hotel
  • Mark Latham – Regeneration Director at Urban Splash, currently leading the transformation of Park Hill, a Grade II* listed modernist icon in the UK

We expect this to be a lively and thought-provoking event, bringing together perspectives from publishing, architecture, art, and regeneration.

Following the debate, there will be an informal evening with tapas and drinks, music and you are most welcome to join us. It will be a relaxed and enjoyable occasion to continue the conversation and connect with the speakers and guests.
