Lessons from European startups

The first trans-continental Networking Academy for African and European Digital Innovation Hubs.AfriConEU supports the strengthening of existing Digital Innovation Hubs in Africa and facilitates the collaboration between EU and African DIHs to strengthen a common EU- Africa innovation and Startup ecosystem.

Participants will learn key success factors of European startups in order to take 
the African startup economy to the next level.

By introducing fundamental subjects such as access to talent, finance and public policy aspects (insights for data-driven policy making) that drove Europe into a unified market, African DIHs and startups will acquire insights significant towards the goal of startup growth and development of a common market. European start-ups are indeed being created and growing at an unprecedented pace, attracting the attention of global investors, customers, and corporate partners alike so several lessons could be exploited.The ultimate goal is to build a community of innovators between Europe and Africa and understand how collaborations could be fostered.

João Barros:João Barros is the Strategic Director of the Center for Business Innovation at Porto Business School.João Barros is Chief Platform Officer at Near Inc., former Founder and CEO of Veniam Inc., acquired by Nexar Inc. He is also Full Professor (on leave) of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Porto, Portugal. He was Founding Director of Instituto de Telecomunicações in Porto, which grew from 8 to 100 researchers during his six-year tenure. Joao Barros was also a Fulbright scholar twice and has held visiting appointments at MIT, Stanford, Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. He regularly teaches at the Porto Business School and served on the board of Streambolico, a WiFi multicast company he co-founded (later leading to Codavel). Dr. Barros has received several awards, including the 2010 IEEE ComSoc Young Researcher Award (EMEA), the 2011 IEEE ComSoC and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award, the 2012 BES National Innovation Award, the 2013 Building Global Innovators Grand Prize (ISCTE-IUL and MIT) and a Best Teaching award by the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts. His work has been featured on NPR, BBC, MIT Technology Review, TechCrunch, FastCompany, and The Atlantic, among several other relevant media outlets.João is fluent in Portuguese, German, English, French and Spanish. He received his undergraduate education in ECE from the Universidade do Porto (UP), Portugal and Universitaet Karlsruhe, Germany, a performing arts degree in flute from the Music Conservatory of Porto, and the Ph.D. degree in EE and IT from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), Germany.The focus of his research lies in information theory, communication networks and data security.
