Fold, Flag, Fragment: Collage on a Sculptural Book Form

Fold, Flag, Fragment: Collage on a Sculptural Book Form

R. Gomes Freire 161Lisboa, Lisboa
Wednesday, Mar 25 from 3 pm to 6 pm
Overview

Explore collage in 3D through the flag book — and turn fragments of images and text into narratives in motion

In The Art of the Fold, Hedi Kyle presents book structures as three-dimensional forms that change through folding and unfolding. The flag book reflects this approach: it is not read from beginning to end, but activated through opening and creates movement across its surface. This understanding of the book as form in space provides the starting point for the workshop.

Participants will make a small flag book and use it as a base for collage. The structure naturally supports repetition, variation, and visual flow, making it well suited to working with fragments of images and text. Rather than focusing only on individual pages, attention is given to how elements connect and how imagery shifts as the book opens. Movement—both physical and visual—guides the placement of material.

The session begins with a short introduction to the flag book structure, followed by step-by-step construction. The technique combines an accordion spine with attached “flags” that extend outward when opened, creating a layered, kinetic effect. Whilst assembling it, participants will develop collage content that adapts to this movement, considering rhythm, alignment, and interruption across the unfolding form.

All materials will be provided.

Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
