(Financial) Life after NHR

The ‘non-habitual resident’ (NHR) tax regime was introduced in Portugal in September 2009. The generous benefits of NHR made it extremely attractive to pensioners, and naturally, they have become one of the largest groups to join the regime.

Due to the 10-year limit, some individuals have either already lost or will soon lose this status. Thereafter, they will be taxed as a "normal" tax resident.

However, it is still possible to benefit from a favorable tax regime in Portugal, especially for pensioners.
