This workshop reconsiders the human perception of figure and background.

An organism 'is' its own particular way of seeing reality. While reality exists, the way the world appears to any organism is incomplete. In order to reproduce and survive, organisms have developed the ability to include what is of biological importance and to mask what is irrelevant. To do this, organisms skillfully draw boundaries around the focus of their contemplation. They distinguish the salient and the aspects of the world that motivate action, while everything else is ignored, forgotten or filed away under boredom. Thus, at a fundamental level, humans and other species divide the world into two parts: figure and ground, a distinction that structures the way all beings experience their worlds.For inspiration, we will explore artworks that capture the ambiguities of the ground-ground setting and scenarios that play with the figure-figure, but we will not deal with optical illusions or Gestalt theories.Participants will devise innovative artistic strategies for their studio work - from the inside out and outside in. The logic behind this workshop has been developed in line with CADA's new 'ground-ground' piece, which understands reality as an integral whole. It introduces the idea that human cognition, like animal cognition, is deeply ecological.The workshop also seeks to remind participants that a sense of reciprocity can be shared between the viewer and the creator of an artwork in terms of experience - and, in this context, between the participants.The event activities will be held in Portuguese language. WHEN AND WHERETwo 4h sessions, @FBAUP:<ul><li>Tuesday, 12 March 2024, 14:00 GMT, ROOM PS43</li><li>Wednesday, 13 March 2024, 14:00 GMT, ROOM PS45 </li></ul> WORKSHOP PROGRAMDay 1: Man/machine dichotomy: how the current atomisation within the data sphere leads to a digital environment with too little context (figure-figure), how digital media do not give enough relevance to evolution and history. In contrast, we explain how the numerous modernist and avant-garde movements have sought to privilege the background/context. Day 2: Analysis of 'The Laws of Form' by George Spencer Brown, a mathematician who sought the integral whole. Comparison between different concepts of experience. Pair formation and practical exercise, development and presentation. Feedback sessions, analysis of results and group reflection. REGISTRATIONTo support all students within the workshop curriculum, the registration is limited to a maximum of 16 participants and a minimum of 8. Registration will be managed exclusively through EventBrite.If more participants than available slots are interested, a waiting list will be setup. We ask participants who are unable to attend to cancel their registration on EventBrite so that the system can give an opportunity to those on the waiting list to register and attend. InstructorsCADA is an art group that uses a variety of media to activate a space for experience. Its work is playful, often abstract, and frequently inspired by what in everyday life and in nonhuman environments can be inferred through patterns and what might otherwise be uncomputable. The group’s approach is collaborative and experimental. It also organises Human Entities, an annual programme of public talks focused on technological change and its impacts, and runs workshops and residencies to examine narratives of computation and extend participation in new media.
