Across many OECD countries, the labor share of GDP has been steadily declining. Why have wages lagged behind overall economic growth? This workshop explores the role of employer market power in shaping these trends. Evidence from multiple countries points to a shrinking number of firms competing for workers’ services, raising serious concerns about the future of labor markets. What does this mean for workers, and for the broader economy?
The program begins with keynote lectures by two world-renowned scholars: Eric Posner (University of Chicago) and Ioana Marinescu (University of Pennsylvania). This will be followed by short presentations of NPPI-sponsored research, using Portuguese microdata to examine how employer market power influences firm productivity and even decisions such as employee fertility.
The workshop will close with a policy panel, offering perspectives on how governments and institutions might address the challenges posed by rising employer power.
Keynote and research presentations will take place in English, whereas the final panel will be conducted in Portuguese.
