This year, we will have the following debates:
07/02 - Monetary Policy And Central Banking: Is Unconventional Monetary Policy The New Conventional? - 17:30h
Unconventional monetary policy gained relevance after the 2007 financial crisis, in which Central Banks were willing to do “whatever it takes” to mitigate the consequences of this shock. More than a decade later and after a new crisis – this time sanitary and economic – unconventional monetary policy seems to have conquered its place as the new conventional.
Moreover, the ECB has accompanied the main problems and developments in society, seeking to become an active agent in the fight against climate change (through green bonds), among other new measures present in its strategic review.
We aim to discuss the main advantages and disadvantages of unconventional monetary policy, as well as its future, among other topics.
Speakers:
Vítor Constâncio (Online) - Former Vice-President of the European Central Bank
Chiara Osbat (Online) - Adviser in the Directorate General Economics of the European Central Bank
João Amador - Associate-Director of the Department of Economic Studies at the Bank of Portugal
Margarida Abreu - Senior Associate Professor at ISEG and Member of the Board of Auditors at the Bank of Portugal
Moderator: João Silvestre
08/02 - The Future Of European Integration - 16:00h (Zoom Webinar)
The history of the European project shows us how, in times of great adversity, Europe tends to move towards greater integration.
Appropriately, the current pandemic crisis is a crucial moment for us to reflect on our past and future goals. We must discuss what are the desired levels of economic and political integration, as well as on the geographical expansion of the EU. Additionally, we should also reflect upon the current internal problems within the Union and discuss the main desires and hopes of the younger generations regarding Europe and its institutions.
Speakers:
Elisa Ferreira (Online) - European Comissioner for Cohesion and Reforms
Maria Manuel Leitão Marques (Online) - Member of the European Parliament
Lídia Pereira (Online) - Member of the European Parliament
Moderator: Filipe Caetano
09/02 - Higher Education And Tuition's Policy - 18:00h
Education is an engine of economic development, enabling a more informed and fair society. Even though all levels of education are important for citizens, higher education usually leads to a greater discussion of ideas since there is a greater heterogeneity in its internal and external organization. Therefore, we aim at discussing the main differences regarding entrance exams, teaching style, assessment methods and the funding of Higher Education.
Speakers:
João Sàágua - Rector of Nova University
Maria de Graça Carvalho (Online) - Member of the European Parliament and Former Minister of Science and Higher Education
Miguel Herdade - Associate Director at Ambition Institute (UK)
Moderator - Pedro Freitas
10/02 - The Role Of The Government In Fighting Inequality - 18:00h
Inequality, in its many dimensions, is a phenomenon that persists in all societies and that worsens in periods of crisis, as the one we are going through. It is up to the State to find solutions to solve inequality issue, in order to improve the quality of life of its citizens. There is, however, a wide variety of opinions on the policies that should be used to solve this pressing issue.
Hence, in this debate, we intend to discuss the evolution of the various forms of inequality. Furthermore, we aim at reflecting upon the role the State has had in combating it and the efficiency of the implemented measures.
Speakers:
Ana Gomes - Former Member of the European Parliament and Former Portuguese Diplomat
Nicolas Schmit - European Comissioner for Jobs and Social Rights
Carlos Guimarães Pinto - Elected Deputy of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic
Moderator - Susana Peralta
11/02 - The End Of The Liberal World Order? - 18:00h
Developed countries have been witnesses to a growing nationalist feeling that is beginning to have an impact, not only on electoral results, but also on the lives of citizens. Nationalist populism tends to thrive in times of crisis – as it has happened after 2008 – and undermines international cooperation and the fundamental role that intergovernmental organizations play in solving global problems. The current pandemic has once again reinforced the need for greater cooperation, but several voices have risen against it.
In this debate, we intend to reflect upon our recent past, namely on the role that intergovernmental organizations have played and where and when they were successful or not. Additionally, we also aim at discussing our post-pandemic future, namely whether globalization will continue and how organizations will adapt to an increasingly multipolar world.
Speakers:
Paulo Portas - Former Minister of Foreign Affairs
Ana Santos Pinto - Assistant Professor at Nova FCSH and Former Secretary of State for National Defense
Sofia Moreira de Sousa - European Comission Representative in Portugal
Moderator - Cátia Bruno
