About this event

Coffee has always travelled with people. From the first beans taken from Ethiopia to Yemen, via the Ottoman Empire, European ports and Portuguese colonial routes, the history of coffee is deeply linked to migration, the circulation of knowledge and the meeting of cultures. Today, this history continues to be written in Portugal, where new waves of migration - from Brazil, the PALOP countries, Eastern Europe, South Asia and more recently from the Portuguese-speaking world - are taking place. expats and digital nomads - have marked the hospitality sector and enriched the speciality coffee scene.

In this round table, we will reflect on:

  • The role of immigration in the global diffusion of coffee and Portugal's place in this history.
  • How immigrant communities have transformed the urban landscape with new coffee shops and roasteries.
  • The positive impact of the diversity of knowledge - from Nordic roasting to Brazilian production, from Australian coffee culture to African traditions.
  • The barriers and challenges faced by immigrant professionals in the Portuguese market.
  • The potential of coffee as a catalyst for intercultural dialogue and as a driving force for a more inclusive future for hospitality in Portugal.
