#SEMINARDS2019 (Cancelled)

Keynote Speaker: Jayati Ghosh (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi)

Synopsis: Across the world, in many developed and developing countries, workers and citizens are turning against free trade, which is seen as the main reason for increased inequality, for the erosion of employment prospects and greater insecurity among workers. There are other forces affecting these (like unbridled finance and fiscal austerity) but the increasing control of trade by a few multinational companies is adding to inequalities.

So will the recent turn to protectionism help workers? Not if the market power and rent-seeking activities of large corporations are still allowed to dominate. Instead, workers everywhere need to demand a global new deal based on progressive tax policies, fiscal expansion, regulation and redistribution.
