#SEMINARDS2019

Keynote Speaker: Ana Paula Fernandes (OECD)

Synopsis:

Megatrends are structural shifts in global economic, social, technological or environmental conditions which can be gradual or disruptive and whose ultimate consequences cannot be entirely determined from an initial set of conditions. Some examples include resource scarcity (food, water, energy and environmental changes), population growth (and migration), urbanisation, poverty and inequality, technology. The world is facing ever more volatile, uncertain, faster and simultaneous changes that make us feel as living in a situation of “unprecedented unpredictability”. In our present days, it is not hard to find reports, papers, articles and more generally discourses and narratives that stress how much the pace of change is running fast(-er than ever) and how transformation and disruption are occurring simultaneously across economic, social, political and environmental fields. Many sources, from governments of developed or emerging countries, to private actors, for-profit or non-profit entities, researchers, news-papers, influencers and social media, intellectuals and greater public, often see and describe the world today as turbulent, in which societies are increasingly faced with uncertainty and volatility. The OECD calls it “unprecedented unpredictability”. The universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 universal goals and 169 targets that aim at accompanying humanity towards a sustainable and inclusive economic growth, social equality, healthy environment, will need to be realized in a context of a more interdependent and complex world, which seems in a semi-permanent state of disruption. We will discuss the impact of some of these megatrends in influencing the future of development cooperation policies and its contribution to the multilateralism.
