Join us for a talk on the publishing, translating and reading of anti-colonial literature. During the workshop, we'll be exploring the book “Unity and Struggle’’ by Amilcar Cabral, a Cape Verdean poet, agronomist, theorist and revolutionary.
50 years after liberation from Portuguese colonialism, oppressed communities across
the world continue to face violent systems of domination, exploitation, dispossession
and Genocide. In this context, we look toward the experiences of those who struggled
for justice and liberty before us, to learn from their insights and challenges. Amílcar
Cabral stands out as a vibrant and tragic crystallization of that bygone highmark of
anticolonial struggle: Unwaveringly committed to his people and full of Care for their
plight, able and achieved—and, as so many of his contemporaries, cut down by intrigue
in a failed coup, killed before he could see his country's liberation.
What to Expect from the Event?
Our host Leon Bijan, researcher and educator, will guide the talk on colonial writing
focusing on the central figure of Amílcar Cabral. Based on some short materials from
the book provided to attendees, we hope to foster a space for co-construction of
meaning, desperately needed during intensifyingly violent and oppressive times.
In smaller groups, participants are provided with materials like pens, paper, the book,
and some quotes, to reflect on the talk and collect their own ideas. After a short phase,
we come together to discuss and share.
Reading the book before the event is helpful but not necessary to participate!
