This is our 3rd Hike from No Country For Old Hikers Community. Join our whatsapp Group and be amazed : https://chat.whatsapp.com/CiuVlq4cL4U
Adventures! This hike explores one of Sintra’s lesser-known landscapes, where water, rocks, and time come together. Starting near Pedra Furada Lake in Montelavar, the trail quickly leads into the dramatic limestone world of Campo de Lapiás, where rain and erosion have carved the rock into sharp, sculptural forms that feel almost unreal. From there, the route flows through the quiet greenery of Park da Segueteira, a peaceful forest area scattered with large ancient rock outcrops, before continuing across the rugged Lapiás da Maceira, where the karst landscape becomes even more wild and expressive. The trail then descends into the lush valley of the Ribeira do Mourão, arriving at the true highlight of the hike; the beautiful Cascata de Anços. Hidden among mossy stones and dense vegetation, this waterfall is a perfect place to pause, breathe, and enjoy the cool, natural energy of the place, especially while sintra having a lot rain lately.
Following the river, the path climbs toward one of the most unusual landmarks in the Sintra region; Penedo do Lexim, an ancient volcanic chimney that rises abruptly from the landscape. Unlike the surrounding limestone, this rock is volcanic in origin, formed millions of years ago, and once served as a prehistoric settlement and lookout point, a powerful reminder of both geological and human history. The hike ends on a warm and charming note in Mata Pequena, a beautifully preserved rural village over 300 years old, with stone lanes, traditional houses, and a peaceful countryside atmosphere. And if you’re lucky, you’ll finish your adventure by meeting Zay (José), the friendly donkey who's quiet famous in the village, and thats where the hike will End.
