Kids Art Workshop: Throwing things at the wall to see what sticks
Join us on Sunday morning with your kids to explore their creativity with our lovely host Margarida!
Based on the workshop’s name, the goal is to provide moments of creative exploration through mixed media techniques. Mixed media involves combining different supports and tools: pencils, watercolors, markers, and so on. However, we are not limited to conventional materials; we can work with other mediums and see "what sticks".
Each participant will develop a short story and attempt to transpose a segment of that story onto paper. Through the use of mixed media techniques, everyone will build their own unique composition.
Step-by-Step Methodology:
To ensure a successful experience for the children, I have designed a clear creative roadmap:
- The base: We begin by painting the background with watercolors;
- The Transition: We use a hair dryer to dry the base quickly, preparing it for the next layer;
- The Stamp Lab: We will attempt to create custom stamps together. I will also provide a collection of handmade stamps crafted from recycled materials;
- Layering & Composition: Finally, on top of the watercolor background, the participants will use collage techniques and the stamps to bring their stories to life.
Examples:
To better illustrate the "Trial and Error" and "Mixed Media" concept, I take inspiration from the work of Ferreira Gullar in his project Zoologia Bizarra.
Ferreira Gullar - Zoologia Bizarra
The video showcases Gullar’s creative process, where he transforms random scraps of paper, leftovers from mail, invitations, and previous works, into fantastic creatures. He emphasizes that his art is born from chance rather than a pre-planned sketch. By simply moving a scrap of paper around, he might see a beak, a wing, or a tail, allowing the material itself to dictate what the final "beast" will be.
About Margarida, the host:
Originally from Almada, Margarida was the student who would fill every margin of her notebooks with sketches and doodles. What began as a creative escape during lessons soon evolved into a vocation. Today, Margarida teaches children and young artists how to draw, sculpt, and paint.
She holds a Degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts (University of Lisbon) and has since established a professional career dedicated to art education. Her experience spans diverse environments, from extracurricular programs and creative workshops to teaching in public schools, allowing her to engage with a wide range of age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds, from Preschool to Middle School.
Despite her professional path, she remains a student at heart; her enthusiasm for art is ever-evolving, and she continues to expand her craft, currently exploring the intricate world of Jewelry.
